About

Last updated October 29, 2026

TidyKit is a set of free file tools that run entirely inside your browser. It currently offers batch renaming and image resizing, and more tools built on the same principle are on the way.

Why it exists

Cleaning up file names and shrinking images are common tasks, but the easy options are not always good ones.

  • Windows Explorer's batch rename only handles prefixes and numbers, so it cannot conditionally remove a prefix like Screenshot_.
  • PowerShell is powerful, but you have to remember the commands, and a mistake is hard to undo.
  • Desktop apps require installing something. On work or school computers, installation is often blocked outright.
  • Most online converters upload your files to a server. Sending photos or documents to someone else's machine never feels right.

So I built tools that need no installation, never upload your files, and let you preview the result first.

How it works

There is no separate server that processes files. The site is served as static files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), and all processing happens in your browser.

Batch renaming

  1. Read — the zip is read into browser memory and unpacked. File name encoding is checked so Korean names stored as CP949 are restored correctly.
  2. Compute — the rule list is applied to every file in order to produce new names. This step is a pure function, so the result is always the same.
  3. Write — a new zip is built with the new names and downloaded. The original zip is untouched.

Image resizing

  1. Read — your browser decodes the selected image directly.
  2. Compute — the image is redrawn on a canvas at the requested pixel size or percentage. With the ratio lock on, changing one side updates the other.
  3. Write — the result is encoded as a new image file and downloaded. The original stays where it is.

When you press download, the result is saved on your own computer. Your files are never sent to a server along the way.

Why you can trust it

"Nothing is uploaded" only matters if you can check it. Checking is easy.

  • Open the Network tab in your browser developer tools (F12), then add files and work. No request the size of your file goes out.
  • Open the page, disconnect from the internet, and use it. Both tools keep working.
  • Every script, including the compression library, is served from this site. Nothing is loaded from an external CDN.

Limitations

Some formats and features are not supported. Here they are, honestly.

  • Renaming supports zip only. 7z, rar, and alz cannot be opened.
  • It uses browser memory. Roughly 500 MB or less is recommended, and ZIP64 archives over 4 GB are not supported.
  • Resizing handles one image at a time. Batch resizing is not available yet.
  • File contents are not modified. The tools rename files and resize images; they do not edit documents or convert formats.
  • Password-protected zips cannot be opened. Extract them first.
  • Reading a photo's capture date to name files automatically is not available yet. Date rules use today's date or a date you specify.

Who makes it

This site is built and run personally by the TidyKit operator. It is not affiliated with any company or organization, and your files are never stored or viewed.

Running costs are covered by the ads shown on the site. If ads bother you, an ad blocker will not affect any tool feature.
